A delay of just 34 minutes sounds like a short delay, but for many travellers it can have significant consequences - especially if a connecting flight is missed. This is exactly what happened on a flight from Munich to Madrid. Passengers missed their connecting flight to Marrakech due to this short delay and had to wait until the next day for a replacement flight. But what claims do passengers have in such a case? In this article, we explain what compensation you are entitled to and how you can successfully claim it.
According to EU Regulation 261/2004, passengers are entitled to compensation if they miss a connecting flight. In our case, for a flight from Madrid to Marrakech, each passenger is entitled to compensation of EUR 400. This regulation applies because the flight started within the EU and the final destination is outside the EU. The compensation payment also applies if the delay of the first flight is only 34 minutes, but nevertheless led to a significant delay at the final destination.
In addition to the compensation payment, passengers can also claim additional costs incurred as a result of the delay. In this case, the passengers had to spend a night in Madrid as the replacement flight was not available until the next day. The following claims can be made:

In order to successfully enforce these claims, it is crucial to keep all receipts for costs incurred. Without these receipts, it is almost impossible to claim reimbursement of the additional costs from the airline. Make sure you keep receipts for the hotel, taxi journeys and catering costs in a safe place. These receipts serve as proof and are essential for asserting your rights.
Even a short flight delay can have a significant financial impact if it results in missing a connecting flight. In this case, passengers can claim compensation of EUR 400 per person as well as reimbursement of hotel, taxi and catering costs totalling more than EUR 1,000. In order to get your money back, it is important to keep all relevant receipts and act quickly.
