Flying with animals: What you need to know before your pet goes on vacation with you
Many pet owners don't want to do without their four-legged companions on vacation. Flying with pets is generally possible - but there are a few things to consider to ensure a safe and stress-free journey for people and animals.
Can my pet go on the plane with me?
Whether a pet is allowed on board depends on the airline and the animal itself.
Small animals (e.g. cats, small dogs): may travel in the cabin with many airlines if they do not exceed a certain maximum weight (usually 8 kg) together with their transport bag.
Larger animals: must be transported in the cargo hold in special IATA-approved transport boxes.
Exceptions: Certain dog breeds (e.g. brachycephalic breeds such as pugs or bulldogs) are sometimes not transported in the hold for safety reasons.
Tip: Ask the airline in good time and reserve the transport space - the number of animals per flight is often limited.

What documents and vaccinations are required?
The following requirements apply when traveling within the EU:
- EU pet passport
- Microchip identification
- Proof of a valid rabies vaccination
For countries outside the EU, additional health certificates, blood tests or quarantine periods may be required. Information on this can be obtained from the competent veterinary office or the embassy of the country of destination.
Transport box and acclimatization
The transport box must be stable, escape-proof and large enough for the animal to stand upright and turn around.Water intake must be guaranteed.
Important: The animal should be accustomed to the crate before the flight - this reduces stress.
Don't forget to label it with your name, telephone number and travel details.
Behavior at the airport and on the plane
- Arrive at the airport on time - check-in often takes longer with an animal.
At the security checkpoint, the animal usually has to be taken out of its crate and checked separately.
Tranquilizers should only be administered in consultation with a vet.
What does flying with an animal cost?
Prices vary depending on the airline:
In the cabin: usually €30-70 each way
In the cargo hold: often €80-200, depending on weight and route
Fazit
Flying with your pet is possible - but requires good preparation. If you obtain all the necessary information in good time and prepare your pet well, you can take off together in a relaxed manner.
