Overbooking

“Overbooking” of flights is a common cause of denied boarding against the will of the passenger. Airlines regularly overbook their flights to make sure their planes fill up. This means that they assign one seat to more than one passenger, because they expect some passengers not to show up at the airport or to cancel their flight last minute.
